The History of Hampi

The seat of the Vijayanagara empire was established by the Saint Vidyaranya with his disciples Hakka and Bukka in 1336. It became one of the biggest Hindu empires in Indian history, and by the 16th century it covered an area of several hundred square miles. The empire was known for supporting reconstruction of Indian temples, as well as supporting art, music and literature. There are hundreds of temples, palaces and other ruins in Hampi, set around nine square miles of South Indian landscape.

At the top end of the main road, the Hampi Bazaar, stands the 120-ft tall tower of the Virupaksha Temple. Some parts of the temple are from before the Vijayanagar time, and inside the temple are several shrines including one devoted to Shiva.
